Litter picking in Kettering

We host monthly litter picks along with a number of other groups in Kettering. At these community picks, we provide all the equipment you need, including a picker, litter picking hoop, bin bags, and a high vis. Our litter picks also serve as a local councillor surgery, so if you have any issues, do come along and have a chat.

Our monthly picks are on the 3rd Sunday of the month, and below you can see our planned locations up until later this year:

  • 19th Feb – St Michaels Church, Garfield Street
  • 19th March – Keystone Centre, Rockingham Road
  • 16th April – The Beeswing, Rockingham Road
  • 21st May – TBC (will be decided based on local reports of high-litter areas)
  • 18th June – The Cordwainer, on the corner of Bath Road and Cedar Road
  • 16th July – Weekley Hall Wood (entrance by the layby)
  • 20th Aug – Rockingham Road Pleasure Park
  • 17th Sept – TBC (will be decided based on local reports of high-litter areas)
  • 15th Oct – Brambleside shops

If you are interested in coming along, you can keep up to date with the events via our Facebook page, or you can call our litter-picking lead, Polly on 07792 510671.

Want to get picking yourself?

You can buy your own litter picking gear and we can provide the council bags. With the council recognised bags, you can go solo picking anytime – all you then need to do is put your bag by any black public waste bin and report that you have left this there on www.FixMyStreet.com. If you are solo picking, we also advise you join the Kettering Wombles group to log your bags and join the already huge community of pickers in our town!

Buying litter-picking equipment

Litter picker – £12.99/£14.99 + VAT

These are the litter pickers the council uses and they come in a range of sizes, 33” or 37” are the regular sizes: https://www.hhenvironmental.co.uk/product/litterpicker-pro/

Litter picking hoop – £21.43

The litter picking hoops are more expensive, but trust us – they are worth it! These silicone ones are also what the council uses and are really heavy-duty. Other plastic hoops with handles have been known to snap and are a lot more flimsy: https://www.aspli.com/2450/litter-bin-bag-hoop-refuse-sack-opener-holder/

High vis – £3.59 (recommended)

These can be as little as a couple of pounds depending on where you get it, but Screwfix do a basic one for £3.59 – or you can buy a Kettering Wombles one through the group for £9! Just message Kelly Mercer. https://www.facebook.com/groups/426445334965147/
