Pavements for People

When we first became councillors one issue we heard a lot about was blocked pavements. This included pavements blocked by bins or by parked vehicles which in some cases caused some very real problems for people: disabled residents in wheelchairs and mobility scooters couldn’t get out of their homes or go along a road without being forced into the street, parents with prams were being forced to walk in the road and visually impaired or other vulnerable people were again put into a dangerous situation if the walkway was blocked.

So how can you help?

Living Streets started an excellent campaign called Pavements for People – and we want to continue their messaging.

There are three ways you can help:

  • Keep the street where you live free of clutter (keep your bins around the back, and report any other blockages like flytipping or fallen branches to FixMyStreet.com
  • Park considerately. If you have no choice but to park on the pavement, make sure you leave enough space for a mobility scooter to pass, but ideally if you can park completely on the road, you should try to do so.
  • Be a champion. Text us requesting a ‘Pavements for People’ poster (07938108810) and stick it in your front window or in the back window of your car. Talk to your neighbours and get them on board. If you don’t usually talk to your neighbours, get in touch and we can provide you with a flyer and a letter to help start that conversation for you. Let’s start talking about this and why it matters.

The other big thing about championing #PavementsForPeople is getting active. We want everyone to be able to be able to walk to their destination if they want to (or scoot on mobility scooters) and making pavements accessible again is so important for getting us all moving. It also helps our neighbourhoods feel safer because we’re all looking out for one another. So please, share this page, get involved and let’s reclaim our pavements!
